Gender
Role Development
A gender role defines what we can and cannot do or what is expected of us to do or not to do based on whether we are male or female. In human development, the role of expectations based on gender roles can impact many other aspects.
Albert Bandura’s theory highlighted that we learn our gender roles by watching, learning, and imitating models.
Jerome Kagan’s theory highlighted that gender roles are introduced in infancy, when children receive differential treatment according to their gender.
As a child, I saw my mother cook, clean, and do many feminine chores around the house, while my father fixed things around the house took the trash out, did yard work. But it ran smooth, and they had a genuine understanding.
