Parenting  (Four Styles)

Diana Baumrind Theory

Authoritarian

This parent is strict but does not explain why to you. It’s all about “because they said so”. Children deserve explanations & need to know why. They have questions & opinions that need feedback from the parent.

Authoritative

This is the type of parenting style I was raised under. It teaches you morals and gives you guidance. The parent rules with an iron fist, but also takes the time to explain things to you. This parent gives you love, and you feel that love consistently.

Permissive

The permissive parent wants to be the cool parent aka the child’s friend. This is not the way to go. The child will be spoiled and will not be very accepting of the word “no”.

Neglectful

This type of parenting style hurts the child in the long run. The child will seek attention elsewhere and act out, as a result. The child will give the teacher problems, because they know there are40no consequences for his/her actions.

My mother and Grandfather were Authoritative parents. They were strict, yet always showed love and affection towards us. They also talked to us and explained things to us and also listened to us to make sure we had a mutual understanding.
